Answer:

I can name a few you might like to check out.

The Korg MS-2000 is the big brother of the MicroKorg. It's also a little older. Internally, it's about the same but has a much better user interface that makes it more enjoyable to work with.

The Alesis Ion is another good one that came out at about the same time as the MS-2000. It's comparable to the MS-2000, and also spawned a little brother (the Micron).

If you want to go with something older, check out the original Roland Juno series - the Juno 6, 60 or 106. Classic 80's sound.

Lastly, I'd like to recommend AGAINST the Yamaha DX series. Very affordable and abundant, and also one of my favourite synths. But if you're just getting into synthesizers, you will find it highly frustrating.

You may also want to check out the forum at www.vintagesynth.com to see what others recommend. I've learned a lot from that site.
